Dear BB1,
Last Friday, your Dad and I had another routine sonogram. We love going to these doctor’s appointments because we get to see you, or at the very least we get to hear your heartbeat and hiccups and tiny baby noises. This time, we got to see your little tiny features: your eyes, your mouth, your face, your feet and hands. We watched your legs kick, and your arms flail. You made a fist, and spread your fingers wide, too. At the beginning, your feet were almost above my right hip, and your head was on my left. Towards the end, you’d practiced some of your already sweet dance moves and gone almost vertical, with your feet downwards and head upwards.
We watched in awe as the technician maneuvered her apparatus to pull your organs and heart into focus to take images and measurements. She sent us home with your second set of pictures, and MY how much you’ve grown!!
Your Dad and I frequently talk about how terrified we are, because we feel like we have absolutely no idea what we’re doing, when it comes to “doing parenting right”, but from other moms and dads I’ve spoken with, we all feel this way before you grace the world with your presence.
The one thing your Dad and I agree on is that we already love you. We’re already in love with you. We don’t know your name, your likes and dislikes, your sense of humor, your personality, or anything. But we don’t need to know all those things in order to know that you’re already more important than nearly everything else in life. I suppose if that’s the only thing you truly know, as you grow: that you’re the most important thing your Dad and I have ever done, and we love you {(ALWAYS)} then perhaps we will have done a good job.
Perhaps we will have done it right.
